A group of St. Louis women founded St. Louis Children's Hospital as a charity venture in 1879. Physicians of Homoeopathic Medical College of Missouri staffed the hospital from 1879-1910. When the college closed, the hospital sought another medical school affiliation. Following negotiations between Grace Jones, president of the hospital Board of Managers, and Robert S. Barnes Hospital was founded on an endowment established by Robert A. Barnes, a St. Louis wholesale grocer, who died in 1892. The original buildings were constructed between 1912 and 1914. In 1911, a contract was made between the hospital trustees and Washington University School of Medicine affiliating the two institutions, whereby the faculty of the school serves as the medical staff of the hospital.
