My Bible Thoughts, 1819-1829.

Collection comprises one manuscript volume (263 pp., paginated, with table of contents) in which Watson recorded his "Scheme of Christianity," an examination of Christian and Methodist doctrine with his added commentaries on various biblical, religious, and secular matters. Watson composed the piece between 1819-1821, but his addendums date to 1829. Among the topics addressed are Calvinism; the Jewish Sabbath; singing in public worship; Christian dress; "religious toleration;" as well as dueling (p. 201); missionary work in Russia (in a letter drafted to Czar Alexander, p. 229); family planning and contraception (p. 146); Quakers (p. 181); and black ministers (following page 125).
