Correspondence, programs, brochures, speeches, questionnaires, news releases, clippings, and photographs. Under the direction of Ruth C. Lawson, the Institute was organized by Mount Holyoke College in cooperation with the United Nations, the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, and other colleges and organizations, to promote understanding of international affairs and the United Nations' role in world peace. Four one week sessions were held in the summers of 1948-1950. Representatives of schools, colleges, and international organizations as well as a diverse group of individuals, from all over the world, enrolled in the sessions. They participated in lectures, discussions, a trip to the United Nations at Lake Success, and were encouraged to return to their communities to share their experiences. Speakers from government, academia, international and other organizations included: Isaiah Berlin, Francis Biddle, Norman Cousins, Vera M. Dean, John K. Fairbank, Ralph E. Flanders, John Kenneth Galbraith, Sidney Hook, Owen Lattimore, Isador Lubin, John J. McCloy, Charles Malik, Margaret Mead, Alva Mydral, Vijaya Pandit, Lester B. Pearson, Edwin O. Reischauer, Carlos P. Romulo, Eleanor Roosevelt, Dean Rusk, B.F. Skinner.

In 1945, four individuals who had worked on the Manhattan project-John L. Balderston, Jr., Dieter M. Gruen, W.J. McLean, and David B. Wehmeyer-formed a committee and wrote a letter to 154 public figures asking for their opinions about the possibility of the creation of a world government.
