Papers of William H. Kemper include a two-volume holograph diary, 1861-1868, and slightly different typescript copy of the diary, correspondence and newspaper clippings. The diary describes medical practices during the war, documents action at the battles of Shiloh, Chickamauga, and Farmington, and records visits with Andrew Jackson and Abraham Lincoln. One letter written by James Anderson to his wife describes raids by John Morgan against Union supply trains. Indiana physician and Civil War soldier. Collection consists of a two-volume diary kept by Kemper during the Civil War, a typescript copy, related correspondence, and newspaper clippings. Includes descriptions of the battles of Chickamauga, Shiloh, Farmington, and 17th Indiana Regiment's expedition from Maysville, Alabama, to Chattanooga, Tennessee. Contains descriptions of medical practices during the war.
