The papers consist of three scrapbooks of newspaper clippings spanning the years from 1930-1937 which trace the conception and beginning of the Art Barn, as a permanent art center--the first of its kind in Utah. Also included is a history of the Art Barn, limited correspondence, and miscellaneous programs and other items.

Joseph L. Rawlins (1850-1926) was born on 28 March 1850. His parents, Joseph Sharp and Mary Frost Rawlins, had immigrated to Utah in 1849 and settled at the foot of the Wasatch Mountains near Millcreek. Soon after young Joseph's birth the family moved to the southern end of the Great Salt Lake Valley to a settlement later called Draperville.
