Eastwood was curator and later head of the Department of Botany at the California Academy of Sciences, 1849-1949. She was responsible for saving the Academy's type collection after the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. While at the Academy, she carried out much collecting to build up the collection, published over 300 articles, and started a journal, Leaflets of Western botany.
