Sally Miller Gearhart was born Apr. 15, 1931, in Pearisburg, Va. She is the daughter of Kyle M. and Sarah Miller Gearhart and was raised primarily by her mother and grandmother. She studied speech and theater, receiving a Ph. D. from the University of Illinois.
