Robert H. Lowie was a noted anthropologist, professor of anthropology, and specialist on the Crow Indians. He moved from Vienna to New York in 1893, and later received his doctorate from Columbia University, studying with Franz Boas. After doing curatorial and field work for the American Museum of Natural History, in 1921 he joined the anthropology faculty at U.C. Berkeley, where he taught until his retirement in 1950.
