Jefferson Franklin Ray, Jr. was born to Baptist missionaries in Kobe, Japan in 1905. Ray attended Vanderbilt University from 1922 to 1923, before transferring to Yale College. He completed his B.A. at Yale in 1926 and studied philosophy and psychology at the Yale University School of Graduate Studies from 1926 to 1929.
