Biographical Information Sonia Baltrun Kaross was born in 1901 in Lithuania. She grew up in East Arlington, Vermont, and began working at a chair factory there at the age of twelve. Upon the death of her father, Rafael Baltrun, in 1915, Kaross moved to Philadelphia, where she worked for the Lithuanian socialist newspaper Kova as a bookkeeper. The United Textile Workers of America (UTWA) was chartered in 1901 and became a founding union of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO) in 1937. As part of the CIO, the UTWA was renamed the Textile Workers Organizing Committee (TWOC) then the Textile Workers Union of America (TWUA).
