Papers (1938-1992) of Steven Michael Horvath, professor of physiology, researcher anddirector (1962-1984) of the Institute of Environmental Stress at the University ofCalifornia, Santa Barbara. Horvath studied the physiological effects of the environment,particularly air pollutants, altitude, and heat. The bulk of the material documentsHorvath's career after 1961, when he joined the faculty of the University of California,Santa Barbara, and took part in establishing the Institute of Environmental Stress.Materials documenting the Institute include correspondence, drafts and reprints ofresearch reports, minutes of meetings, and annual reports. Also included are writings byHorvath, materials related to the Center for Aging Research at UCSB and typescriptwritings of others. The papers are arranged in six series: 1) MISCELLANEOUS MATERIAL, 2) WRITINGS BY HORVATH,3) CENTER FOR AGING RESEARCH, 4) INSTITUTE OF ENVIRONMENTAL STRESS, 5) UCSBMISCELLANEOUS, and 6) WRITINGS OF OTHERS.

American physiologist educated at Miami University of Ohio (BA 1934) and Harvard University (Ph. D. 1942). At Harvard, Horvath worked in the Fatigue Laboratory under the guidance of the eminent physiologist David Bruce Dill. Horvath eventually married Dill's daughter, and maintained a working relationship with Dill until Dill's death. After earning his Ph. D., Horvath had research and/or teaching appointments at Mass.
