California and Western American historian Andrew F. Rolle graduated from Occidental College in 1943. He served as a military intelligence officer in Europe and as American Vice Consul in Genoa, Italy, from 1945 to 1948. He earned a PhD in history from UCLA in 1953 and taught at Occidental College from 1953 to 1988.
