Cahuilla Oral History Project 1989-1991

A collection of oral history interviews and associated materials created by staff at the Palm Springs Desert Museum. Interviews focus on Cahuilla culture and history. Collection includes both audio and video recordings, transcripts, and subject notes. Interviewees include Anthony Andreas, Judy Diamond, Donna Largo, Catherine Kitchen, Anthony Largo, Katherine Saubel, and Saturnino Torres. Project funded in part by the Palm Springs Art Museum's Natural Science Council, the Coachella Valley Archaeological Society, and the Bureau of Land Management.

Katherine Siva Saubel (1920-2011) was a Cahuilla scholar and educator committed to preserving Cahuilla culture and language. In 1964, she co-founded the Malki Museum on the Morongo Reservation, which promotes scholarship, awareness, and preservation of Southern California Native American histories and cultures. The Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians is a federally recognized tribe of Cahuilla, originally known as Ivilluwenetem, and are one of four Mountain Cahuilla tribes. Donna Mae Largo (1944-2009) was an elder of the Santa Rosa Band of Cahuilla Indians, known for her work in the revitalization and preservation of Cahuilla basketry. She was a basketmaker, basketmaking educator, and medicinal plant expert.
