Wurster founded the Environmental Design Archives (then the Architectural Archives) in 1953 as a teaching collection, following the recommendation of eminent architectural historian Henry Russell Hitchcock. Biographical Note Jack Hermann was born in Topeka, Kansas on September 23, 1917 to Danish immigrant parents. Raised in San Diego, he was active in the Sea Scouts, eventually reaching the rank of Eagle Scout. It was through the scouts that he developed his lifelong love of boats and sailing.
