William R. Melton papers 1927-2004, undated 1944-1986

The William R. Melton papers are part of the Tuskegee Airmen Archive. This collection consists of photographs, newspaper clippings, documents, lithographs, books, and correspondence. Most of these items are related to the military service of the Tuskegee Airmen, Melton's personal life, and Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. Additionally, there are some materials on World War II, aviation history, and African American history. A portion of this collection remains unprocessed.

Biography William R. Melton was born on October 24, 1920. During World War II he enlisted as a pilot in what was then the Army Air Corps and was assigned to the all-black unit. On July 28, 1943 Melton graduated at Tuskegee Army Air Field as a Second Lieutenant of class SE-43-G. He was a member of the original 332nd Fighter Group, serving with the 302nd Fighter Squadron.
