Adam Marty was born in Switzerland on August 2, 1839 and immigrated with his grandparents to St. Louis in 1846. He moved to Stillwater, Minnesota in 1849 where he worked as a printer. Following the outbreak of the Civil War, Marty enlisted in Company B of the First Minnesota Infantry Regiment, and was soon promoted to corporal.
