Elijah E. Edwards Civil Warjournals. 1864-1865, 1906, 1910.

Three-volume set of journals (typescript compilation and twovolumes of photocopied originals) kept by Edwards, chaplain of the 7th MinnesotaInfantry during the Civil War. The journals contain observant and articulatedescriptions of scenery, towns and villages, people, and the war in Missouri,Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama. Edwards documents camplife and marches, as well as the Battles of Tupelo (July 14-15, 1864), Nashville(December 12-13, 1864), and Mobile Bay (April 1865). He also comments on theattitudes, behavior, and morality of the people involved in the conflict.

Elijah Evan Edwards (1831-1915) was the first president of Colorado State University from 1879 through 1882. Journals from several years he spent as a student at Asbury University (now DePauw) comprise the bulk of the collection. Theodore George Carter was born on February 28, 1832 in Friendship (Allegany County), New York, the son of Miles and Margaretta Loughborough Carter.
