Nathaniel Merrill (1610-1655) was born in Whitshire, England and came to the United States to settle at Newbury, Massachusetts in 1633. He married Susanna Jorden (d.1673), with whom he had seven children. Their fourth child, Daniel Merrill (1642-1717), married Sarah Clough. After her death he remarried to Sara Rowell Page. William Wirt Pendergast was born in New England in 1833. After attending Bowdoin College in Maine, he joined with the Hutchinson brothers to plat a town in Minnesota Territory by the same name. Pendergast returned to Massachusetts sometime before the end of the Civil War where he married Abigail Cogswell.
