Naomi Shihab Nye haspublished several books of poetry, writings for children, and the young adultnovel Habibi, and wrote as a columnist for Organica: A Magazine of Art andActivism. Nye has also worked as a visiting writer in schools at all gradelevels. Her university teaching experience includes the University ofCalifornia at Berkeley, University of Texas at San Antonio, and the MichenerCenter for Writers at the University of Texas at Austin. In 2001, Nye receiveda presidential appointment to the National Council of the National Endowmentfor the Humanities. She has won several awards, including four Pushcart Prizesand a Guggenheim Fellowship. She was a National Book Award Finalist in2002. Collection includes the typescripts, manuscripts,drafts, proofs, and other pre-publication forms of the writings of poet andwriter Naomi Shihab Nye. Writings include early and revised drafts of poems,essays, and other writings. Published work is supplemented by hundreds ofunpublished poems. These working papers are accompanied by notebooks datingback to Nye's high school years, an extensive correspondence file with authors,editors, publishers, family members and fans, copies of her publications inbook form, and her contributions to books and journals. Also present isextensive material about Nye, including audiovisual materials, work relating toher teaching in public schools, and photographs.

Naomi Shihab Nye, born 1952 of a Palestinian father and American mother, grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, Jerusalem, and San Antonio, Texas. She graduated from Trinity University (San Antonio, Tex.) in 1974 and is married to photographer Michael Nye. She has published several books of poetry, writings for children, and the young adult novel Habibi, and wrote as a columnist for Organica: A Magazine of Art and Activism.
