Arvella Vowell worked for many years as a registered nurse, private nurse, psychiatry nurse, and polio nurse in San Antonio, Texas. Her long nursing career and her love of history were the inspiration for creating this collection of nursing memorbilia.

On December 2, 1905, Mrs. Tunis G. Bergen brought together a group of Brooklyn residents at the Barnard Club House on Remsen Street to form New York City's first borough-based Red Cross organization. With an initial membership roster of 300, the Brooklyn Chapter of the American Red Cross embarked on its first major campaign to aid victims of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, collecting over $100,000 and thousands of articles of clothing to contribute to the relief effort. Arvella Bentley Vowell was born in 1904 in Arkansas. Her first experience in nursing was helping her mother take care of her eleven brothers and sisters. It was this experience that created a desire in her to help others. In 1929, Vowell, began the three-year nurses training program at Sealy Hospital in Santa Anna, Texas.
