Roskolenko was born on the Lower East Side of New York in 1907. He ran off to sea at the age of 13 and at 21 became a Third Mate, sailing between America and Europe. During World War II he sailed as a Second officer with the U.S. Army Transport Service on ships running between Australia, New Guinea and the South Pacific.
