Born in Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, Louis Horst (1807-1878) emigrated with his wife Magaretha Mary (1811-1879) to the United States in the 1830s. First arriving in New Orleans, Louisiana, Horst settled in Austin, Texas, around 1836. A butcher by profession, he also owned a plantation, where the couple raised their six children.
