Born in Kansas City, Missouri, William Edward Whitmore, Sr. (1918-1996), worked as a refrigeration mechanic in San Francisco, California, where he lived with his wife Caroline. During World War II, Whitmore served as tank mechanic in the 752nd Tank Battalion. He received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign medal and the Good Conduct medal for his service.
