David Spangler Kaufman (1813-1851) was a lawyer, soldier and politician, who served as the first Jewish United States Congressman from Texas. He was born in Boiling Springs, Pennsylvania, studied law in Natchez, Mississippi, and moved to Nacogdoches, Texas in 1837. Born in South Carolina in 1809, Joseph William Robertson (1809-1870) attended Transylvania University in Kentucky before practicing medicine in Alabama for a year. There he married Ann Philips with whom he had two children. In 1836, Robertson moved to Texas with his family arriving the next year. Lawyer, legislator, and soldier, James S. Mayfield (1809-1852) was born in Tennessee, but moved to Nacogdoches, Texas, in 1837, where he practiced law.
