Emil Grosswald was born in Bucharest, Rumania, on December 15, 1912. He received a Masters' degree from the University of Bucharest (1933) and continued his studies in Paris and Montpelier. Grosswald arrived in the United States in 1946 and received his Ph.D from the University of Pennsylvania (1950). In 1952, after a lectureship at the University of Saskatoon and a year at the Institute for Advanced Study, he joined the Department of Mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania. G...
