The bulk of thecollection consists of unrelated items having to do with the affairs of ElishaMarshall Pease, Texas governor from 1853 to 1857, and his wife LucadiaChristiana Niles Pease. Included also is a significant collection of historicaldocuments, such as a letter from George Washington, an original copy of thepublic Treaty of Velasco, other notable papers from the time of the TexasRevolution and the Republic of Texas, Pease's diary for October 1836 to January1837 with a summary of his later activities, and an extensive autographcollection.

David Gouverneur Burnet (1788-1870) was born in Newark, New Jersey. About 1817 he moved to Natchitoches, Louisiana, and in 1831 to Texas. He was ad interim president of the Republic of Texas from March 17 to October 22, 1836. In 1836 he was elected vice president of the Republic of Texas, serving part time as secretary of state and acting president. From the guide to the David G.
