Alexander Hieken Papers 1931-1960 1941-1960

The papers contain information on the forming of the San Antonio local and the breaking up of the one in Fort Worth, along with records of other defunct guild locals. The activities and duties of a union representative are well documented in the correspondence and contract files. Information may be found concerning Mr. Hieken's efforts with the Publishing Company strike at Little Rock. The collection contains papers that relate to various political and civic activities in which Mr. Hieken was involved. The researcher will find pertinent information from the international union, such as the International Executive Board minutes, 1947-1953. These files not only supplement the Texas material, but give a view of the working of the American Newspaper Guild at a higher level. Material on attempts from 1950-1952 to start a labor newspaper called the is of interest. Other miscellaneous items of interest include a file on anti-union literature of the Joseph McCarthy era.
