Feris (George A.) familypapers 1829-1944, undated, bulk 1850-1900

The Feris familypapers document the daily lives of a landowning Texas family in the nineteenthcentury and contain echoes of the major events of the time, most notably theMexican and Civil Wars, Reconstruction, and even World War I. The papersconsist mainly of personal correspondence between various members of the Ferisfamily: George, his wife Lavinia, and his children, Irene, Achille, Yandell,Sarah (Sallie), and Mary. Also present are business and legal documents,receipts, scrapbooks and accounting books, and documents related to the Ferisfamily's land holdings, including land deeds and judgments, spanning 1835-1944,undated, bulk 1850-1900. George's career as a doctor in the Confederate Armyand then in private practice is documented in the collection. The collectionalso includes Civil War era correspondence and account books reflecting boththe experiences of the soldiers (George, Achille and Yandell all served in theConfederate Army) and those on the home front.

George Achille Feris, born to first-generation European immigrants in 1817 in Kentucky, was a Texas physician who practiced medicine in Fort Bend County before and after the Civil War. Feris graduated from the Military School of Georgetown, Kentucky, and received his M.D. from Transylvania Medical College in Lexington, Kentucky. He moved to Texas from Missouri in 1835.
