Born in Connecticut in 1817, Robert Benedict Russell emigrated to San Augustine, Texas, in 1835. Joining the Texian Army, he fought at the Battle of San Jacinto and later returned to San Augustine where Russell married Lavinia Brownrigg in 1841. Russell published the San Augustine Redlander (1846-1850) and then moved to Sabine Pass. He later located to Orange, Texas, where he was the postmaster from 1861-1875.
