The original campus plans for the University of Florida at Gainesville were developed by the firm of Edwards & Walter. Edwards & Walter were contracted to design and layout the campus buildings in 1905. Additional plans were developed by the firm's successor, Edward and Sayward. Richard W. Bowles was the director of University of Florida bands. He came to the University of Florida in 1958 as an assistant director and became the director of all UF bands in 1961. He taught various instruments and several music courses. In 1973 he retired as director of bands but continued to teach in the Department of Music. From the description of Manuscript music, 1969.
