The original campus plans for the University of Florida at Gainesville were developed by the firm of Edwards & Walter. James Marion Farr was appointed head of English instruction at the Florida Agricultural College at Lake City in 1901 and later served as head of the Department of English at the University of Florida. He became the University's first vice-president and served as acting president upon the death of President A. A. Murphree in December 1927.
