This subgroup includes photographs that document tobacco research and farming in North Carolina. The North Carolina College of Agricultural and Mechanic Arts was founded as the state's land-grant institution in 1887, and formally opened its doors two years later. From its beginnings, North Carolina State University has been deeply involved in outreach and extension work, bringing research on major North Carolina crops--such as tobacco--to farmers across the state.

North Carolina State University was established in 1887 as the North Carolina College for Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The College opened in 1889 with one building - the current Holladay Hall - six faculty, and courses in the agricultural and mechanical arts, adding a curriculum in applied science in 1893.
