He first came to Currituck County, N.C., in 1916, and purchased Mackay Island and a hunting club from author Thomas Dixon soon thereafter. Beginning in 1920, he and his family spent most of their time in North Carolina. In 1923, Knapp began donating money to the educational system in Currituck County, N.C.. Through the Knapp Foundation, Inc., he continued to donate money to North Carolina schools for the rest of his life. The Knapp Foundation's biggest contribution, funding to construct the Insitute of Government Building at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, occurred after Knapp's death.
