Vernon F. Shogren was born on April 26, 1924 in Cloquet, Minnesota. In 1950 he received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Minnesota. He graduated with a Master of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1952. As a Fulbright Scholar during 1952-1953, he received a certificate from the Technische Hogeschole, Delft, Netherlands. Between 1951 and 1969, many architecture students at North Carolina State University completed summer projects documenting historic buildings and districts.
