Frank Albert Smothers (1901-1981) graduated from Northwestern University and joined the Chicago Daily News in 1925. After several years on the city staff, Smothers served as a foreign correspondent in England, France, China, and Japan and covered the Spanish Civil War. He is best known for his coverage of gangland violence in the 1920s and his reporting during World War II in both Europe and Asia.
