Society of the Sigma Xi of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Records, 1913-1965

The Society of the Sigma Xi was founded at Cornell University in 1886 to encourage original research in the pure and applied sciences. The University of North Carolina Chapter was chartered on 30 December 1919 and held its first meeting on 26 May 1920. In addition to lectures held throughout the year, the main function of the chapter was the annual initiation ceremony held in conjunction with the annual meeting during the University's commencement week. Records of the University of North Carolina Chapter of the Society of the Sigma Xi include correspondence with local members, prospective lecturers, and national Sigma Xi officials; membership nominations, acceptances, and rolls; lecture announcements; and minutes of meetings. Also included are the charter of the chapter, society diplomas, and petitions for the establishment of new Sigma Xi chapters.
