Collier Cobb (1862-1934) was chair of the Geology Department at the University of North Carolina, 1893-1934. His photography stemmed from his work in geology and other sciences, and he traveled extensively and used photography to document his interests. Established as a senior class project in 1844, the University Magazine was a monthly literary journal. The project was not successful and lasted only one year (twelve numbers). In late 1851, an effort was mounted to revive the periodical, and in February 1852, the first number appeared.
