The North Carolina Alpha chapter ofPhi Beta Kappa honorary society was established at the University of North Carolinain 1905. From 1920 to 1948, Francis F. Bradshaw and Ernest L. Mackie, as Dean of Menor Dean of Students, administered the chapter. From 1948 to 1966, Dean Mackiecontinued his activity in local chapter, district, and national affairs while he wasa full-time member of the university's Department of Mathematics.
