Walter L. Steele Papers, . 1804-1863

Walter L. Steele (1823-1891) of Richmond County, N.C., was a manufacturer and held various political offices, including U.S. representative, 1877-1881. The collection is a volume of business records, 1849-1863, of Steele, including accounts of notes owed him; accounts with the Wilmington, Charlotte, and Rutherford Railroad, of which he was a director; accounts with various banks and with the state of North Carolina for bonds; memoranda about lands owned in Tippah County, Miss.; extensive accounts and agricultural memoranda for a fruit orchard business, involving Thomas Lindley, in Chatham County, N.C.; and miscellaneous papers, 1804-1839, including indentures and other papers relating to land in Anson County, N.C.
