Blakeslee was born January 13, 1912 in Evanston, Illinois to Walter Conklin and Carolyn Van Akin Blakeslee. She moved often while growing up, living in Evanston, Washington, D.C., Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Muskegon, Michigan.
