William H. Powell served as a colonel inthe 2nd West Virginia Cavalry Regiment. He commanded a brigade of cavalry as part ofGeneral David Hunter's campaign through the Shenandoah Valley in pursuit ofConfederate general Jubal Early. The collection consists of five letters, 21-29 July 1864,written by William H. Powell to General William W. Averell, Captain H. Harrison, andCaptain W. Rumsey, while Powell was commanding a brigade of cavalry as part ofGeneral David Hunter's campaign through the Shenandoah Valley in pursuit ofConfederate general Jubal Early. The letters, written from Stephensburg, W.Va., andnear Winchester, Va., describe Confederate movements and reports ofactivity.
