Michael Piller graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor's degree in radio, television, and motion pictures in 1970. He was best known for his work as executive producer and writer for the television series , , and , the latter two of which he helped create. Included are early and final drafts, with color-coded page revisions; story outlines; technical notes; shooting schedules; and handwritten annotations by Piller.
