Doris June Waugh Betts was a white North Carolina author and Alumni Distinguished Professor of English at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Michael McFee was born in Asheville, N.C., on 4 June 1954. He received an A.B. (1976) and M.A. (1978) in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and has taught at the University since 1984. McFee has published collections of poetry, served as assistant editor for poetry at DoubleTake magazine, and was coordinator of the Second Sunday Reading Series in Chapel Hill.
