Henry C. Lay Papers, 1842-1929

Henry C. Lay was an Episcopal clergyman and bishop. Lay preached to the Army of Tennessee at times during the Civil War. The collection includes family and church-related correspondence, including sermons,scrapbooks, writings, and diaries of Henry C. Lay while an Episcopal priest inVirginia, 1846-1847; in Huntsville, Ala., 1847-1859; missionary bishop of Arkansasduring the Civil War; and missionary bishop of the Diocese of Easton, Md.,1869-1885. Included is a journal of Episcopal acts for most of the years1863-1885 and European travel diaries, 1866-1867 and 1878-1879. The Addition of July 2010 consists of a recipe book, circa 1915, belonging to Eliza Atkinson Lay.
