Charles Lanman was a writer, editor, librarian to various goverment agencies, and original author of . Dictionary of the United States Congress The collection includes brief autobiographical sketches submitted to Lanman by members of Congress for inclusion in his , first published in 1859. The sketches contain some unpublished material. Subjects include Thomas Bragg (1810-1872), Aaron Venable Brown (1795-1859), Clinton Levering Cobb (1842-1879), Francis Burton Craige (1811-1875), John Thomas Deweese (1835-1906), John Adams Gilmer (1805-1868), Richard Clausell Puryear (1801-1867), Edwin Godwin Reade (1812-1894), William N. Charles Lanman, writer, journalist and amateur painter, was born in Monroe, Michigan, June 15, 1819. He spent much of his career working as a journalist in Monroe and Cincinnati, Ohio. He moved to Washington DC in 1848 and worked as a librarian in various branches of government, including the War Department, the Copyrights Division of the Department of State, the executive library of President Fillmore, and the Interior Department.
