The collection includes miscellaneous items, including a letter, 1799, from Patrick Henry about a land transaction; a letter, 1812, from Samuel Hairston about political affairs in Washington, D.C.; and a letter, 1862, from Confederate soldier, C. H. Jones, describing a recent engagement near Fredericksburg, Va. Also included are a Wilson family genealogy and an article about Samuel Hairston. Five scattered items related to various members of the Hairston family. The collections was named for the donor, but not concerned directly with him or with any other member of the Hairston family named Robert. Included are a letter, 1799, from Patrick Henry to Colonel George Hairston about the sale of land, horses, and other business; a letter, 1812, from Samuel Hairston to his father George Hairston, about his recent illness and current news; and a letter, 1862, from Confederate soldier C. H. Jones to his mother, written from a camp near Fredericksburg and describing a recent fight in that area. Also included are a genealogy, (typescript, 12 pages) of the Wilson family of Pittsylvania County, Va., compiled by Jessie Wilson Wood, and a typed copy of "The Richest Man in Virginia," an article on Samuel Hairston from De Bow's Review. Typed transcriptions of the letters are filed with the originals.
