Norman Gustaveson was secretary of the Campus Y at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1964-1976. He also served as faculty advisor to the UNC chapter of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) during the Speaker Ban controversy, 1965-1966. He served as Orange County (N.C.) commissioner, 1974-1982, where he was particularly active in social activism, environmentalism, land conservation, and energy consumption. He was a charter board member of the Triangle Land Conservancy in 1983 and was also active in the Eno River Association. The collection includes correspondence and other materials relating to Norman Gustaveson's student days at Drake University, 1952-1956; the University of Chicago, 1956-1959; and the London School of Economics and Political Science, 1960; and to his work at the Anderson Y Center at the University of the Pacific (then College of the Pacific) in Stockton, Calif., 1960-1964, and the Campus Y at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1964-1976. There are also materials relating to his social justice activities at UNC, including articles and correspondence documenting the 1965-1966 Speaker Ban controversy; papers related to Students for a Democratic Society (SDS), including correspondence with SDS leader Jim McCorkel; correspondence with student representatives, 1960s-1980s; and correspondence and related materials of Ronald E. Santoni, social activist and philosophy professor at Denison University. Also included are data sets, correspondence, drafts of reports, worksheets, and instructional handbooks related to an energy usage and conservation study in Orange and Wake counties, N.C., conducted by Gustaveson and UNC physics professor Joseph Straley, late 1970s-early 1980s; materials related to Gustaveson's service on the Orange County (N.C.) Board of Commissioners, where he also worked with the National Association of Counties, 1974-1982; materials relating to his work with the Triangle Land Conservancy; speeches; class syllabi; notes; files on conferences and travel; photographs; and other items.

The Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers and Cleveland Browns used Pacific University's facilities for football training camps in the late 1950s to early 1960s.
