L. H. Fountain Papers, 1946-1982

L. H. (Lawrence H.) Fountain (1913-2002) of Edgecombe County, N.C., served as a United States representative from 1953-1982 in North Carolina's Second District. The collection contains the professional papers of Fountain and include general correspondence; subject, legislative, committee, and district files; and speeches, newsletters, and radio broadcast scripts. The papers contain extensive information on social and economic conditions in North Carolina, including integration in the state's public schools. They also document Fountain's leadership of the Intergovernmental Relations Subcommittee of the House Government Operations Committee, which Fountain chaired from 1955 to 1982, and examined waste, inefficiency, and corruption in federal agencies, including material related to the Food and Drug Administration. Fountain's work on the Foreign Affairs Committee and related subcommittees is also documented. A significant portion of the collection is the subject and legislative files which document numerous topics and highlight prominent issues at local, national, and international levels during Fountain's career in Congress.
