American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Records, . 1927-1991

The American Association (later Alliance) for Health, Physical Education and Recreation, a division of the National Education Association, was formed in 1927 to awaken a wide and intelligent interest in physical and health education; to acquire and disseminate knowledge concerning it; and to promote such universal physical and health education as will provide well-trained teachers and secure adequate programs throughout the South. The Southern District includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. This collection contains the records of the Southern District of AAHPER. Included are lists of members, officers, and convention delegates; correspondence; publications; clippings; and constitutions; photographs; audiotapes; convention programs; minutes and reports, including financial reports; material related to first president A. D. Browne; and presidential papers of Ruth Cady. Volumes include biographies of Nathan Taylor Dodson, Edward Hitchcock, Jessie Reid Garrison Mehling, Emma W. Plunkett, Jackson Roger Sharman, Mary Ella Soule, and Solon B. Sudduth, and histories of the individual state associations and of the development of physical education in the South. Also included are several unprocessed additions.
