Beulah Compton was born on March 29, 1919. She earned her BA degree from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1941, her M.A. from Indiana University in 1951, and her PhD from the University of Chicago in 1971. In 1952, she came to the University of Minnesota, where she would spend 30 years as an instructor and professor in the School of Social Work. Social work education was first initiated at the University of Minnesota in 1917 via the Training Course for Social and Civic Work program within the department of sociology. The program consisted of five years of course work, resulting in a Master's degree, with the first awarded to Mary Agnes Meier in 1918.
